It’s Sun Spot Season Again!

It is time once again for a technical phenomenon called “sun outages”, also called “solar outage” and “sun spots”. For a period of about 15 days, starting October 1st at our Headend site, the sun will cause “solar interference” to all geostationary satellite signals coming into our headend. As the sun’s path across the sky gets lower each day, there are times when it is in a direct line behind a communication satellite that is sending signals to our receiving satellite dish here in Wapakoneta. When the dish antenna is looking into the sun, the interference from the sun overrides the signals from the satellite. This is when a sun outage occurs.

Sun outages typically can last as long as 15 minutes per channel and take place each day over a period of 15 days. The effects of sun outages vary in degree from minimal to total outage throughout the 15 day period. Once it reaches its peak, the interference will gradually decrease becoming less noticeable each day after. The rolling outages will start at approximately 2PM EDT each day and should be over by approximately 6PM EDT. This will affect none of the off air channels.

Please note, these estimates do not include outages that could occur at broadcaster uplink locations.

Regarding the Internet Outage on 8/30/2020

We wanted to provide a brief overview of the nationwide network outage that occurred during the morning hours on Sunday, August 30th causing connectivity issues to many locations on the internet. CenturyLink/Level3 is a network service provider that operates a large global network that our providers peer with and our providers noticed issues around 7 am. Upon discovering issues, our providers and our network team tried to migrate traffic to other partners with no success. It appears that while CenturyLink was offline between our networks, they were still advertising our networks to the world causing traffic to reach their network instead of other providers. They have since confirmed that an automated process loaded a bad configuration across their network which didn’t allow these sessions to shutdown properly and permit the normal flow of traffic. This is one of the largest internet outages of it’s kind and it has received appropriate press if you wish to read further. We have linked a couple of articles below for further reading!

Watch out for Scam and Spoof Emails!

We have seen an increased amount of spoofing attempts as of late and wanted to provide some tips on how to detect these types of emails. Please note: We will never contact you via email asking you to click on any links or download any attachments. This is usually a good indication the email is illegitimate.
Whenever you are unsure if an email is legitimate you can place your mouse over the “Sender” and it will let you know what email address this email was sent from.  

For instance: Below are some screenshots on some of the most recent scams that we have seen. The most recent spoofing attempt we’ve seen was the “Email storage limit has been exceeded” emails that were delivered this weekend. It looks somewhat legitimate but if you mouse over the “Sender” (see the screenshot below) you can see that it was sent from the fake email listed in the screenshot.

If you are unsure of a specific email you can also forward a copy to and we can help you to determine if the email is legitimate or not.
